The salary for this role will be £30K to £40K depending upon experience.
Knowledge/Experience:
Educated to degree level or with equivalent relevant technical
training and experience including an appropriate network qualification
such as CCNA.
• Previous experience of installing, configuring, maintaining,
monitoring and trouble-shooting of network hardware and software and
managing
overall network operation.
• An excellent understanding of Layer 2/3 protocols and virtual network devices
• Previous experience of Cisco (essential) and Fortigate (very desirable)
• Previous experience of providing expert assistance and a high level
of customer service to others in their use of IT resources.
• Previous experience of effectively maintaining and developing IT
documentation.
• Previous experience of working in an academic or research
environment is desirable.
• Previous experience of JANET and JANET-related services desirable.
• Previous experience of maintaining an awareness of, and successfully
implementing, emerging technologies.

Job Description
• Install and setup local area and WAN network equipment, maintain
routing, firewall and related configurations. This includes switches,
routers, hubs, firewalls and wireless access points.
• Create and maintain key low level network configuration for routing,
VLANs, DNS, DHCP, etc in conjunction with other IT team members as
appropriate.
• Install and configure network monitoring systems to allow
troubleshooting, performance monitoring and tuning.
• Monitoring and patching of network hardware and software to maintain
appropriate security levels for the network
• Install, configure and performance-tune storage and server
connections, including virtual network devices, Fibre Channel and SAN.
• Configure and maintain access to directory services for user
authentication of network services such as wireless and VPN.
• Advise on appropriate configuration of network-mediated services
such as content management, web publishing, LRI databases etc.
• Work with System Administrators to optimise network performance for
a scientific research environment, such as transfer of large datasets
and high performance compute workflows
• Implement and configure segregated networks for scientific
acquisition devices
• Provide guidance to other IT team members on network configuration,
management and trouble shooting.
• Maintain an awareness of current and emerging technologies and share
this with colleagues.
• Occasional unsociable or additional hours may be required, including
out of hours support in exceptional circumstances.
